“Walter Swennen est un peintre, né à Bruxelles en 1946. Comme d’autres de sa génération, il aborde et explore le médium de manière nouvelle en appliquant des principes issus d’autres disciplines. L’œuvre de Swennen défie constamment le spectateur. Ses peintures exigent une inspection lente et attentive. Les couches de peinture cachent souvent un véritable champ de bataille de tentatives, de corrections, de mots et de messages. Sa famille néerlandophone s’est soudainement mise à parler français lorsqu’il avait cinq ans, et les jeux de langage font donc partie intégrante de son art. Un tableau de Walter Swennen n’est pas seulement un résultat, mais aussi un processus, qui nous permet de retracer le chemin parcouru par l’artiste pour atteindre l’image “visible” ultime. Une constante essentielle est le plaisir qu’il tire de la bataille avec la peinture. Non-conformiste comme il l’est, Swennen peint sur tout support : de la toile au bois, en passant par les tables de camping, les cuisinières et même les machines à laver. La carrière longue et variée de Walter Swennen mérite d’être reconnue par un large public pour son anticonformisme radical et l’influence que l’artiste exerce encore aujourd’hui sur les jeunes artistes. Swennen est représenté par la galerie bruxelloise Xavier Hufkens et la galerie Gladstone à New York, et a remporté le prestigieux prix Ultima pour l’ensemble de ses services aux arts visuels en 2019. Son travail se retrouve dans de nombreuses collections de musées et de galeries. Ce livre offre un merveilleux aperçu de son œuvre et constitue le catalogue d’une exposition solo internationale qui sera inaugurée au Kunstmuseum de Bonn (juin-août 2021) avant de se rendre au Kunstmuseum de La Haye (automne 2021) et au Kunstmuseum de Winterthur (printemps 2022).”

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is showing the most extensive retrospective to date of the work of Belgian artist Philippe Vandenberg (1952-2009), comprising some 80 paintings and over 120 drawings and prints. This is the first show devoted to Vandenberg in Germany, inviting visitors to discover an important artist who may be unfamiliar to them. Highly acclaimed in his home country of Belgium, Vandenberg produced a radical and unsparing œuvre that is just now achieving greater international prominence. The title of the exhibition, Kamikaze, describes the artist's drastic working methods and results, a basic precept of which is that creativity is only possible through the deliberate destruction of what has gone before. Going beyond any single artistic "style", Vandenberg created complex images of our times which resonate with both contemporary pertinence and existential significance. The majority of the works on loan came from the artist's estate and are now being presented to the public for the first time. Exhibition: Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (16.11.2018 - 24.02.2019).
